536 AD: The Worst Climate Disaster In History

The Worst Year in History was 536

The world as we know it has changed throughout millennia. Many natural disasters have taken place ever since the young Earth came into existence. Some of these disasters came from space, and others were triggered by Earth itself. It is a cycle, and ancient humans managed to adapt to the various changes. However, these natural disasters did not only occur in the distant past. Hey occurred in the not-so-distant past, and they continue to occur, to some degree, even today.

One of the most interesting natural disasters can be dated back to AD 536. This year was one of the most severe episodes of climate cooling in the Northern Hemisphere of the planet for more than 2,000 years. In fact, many scientists say that the year 546 was the worst in “recent” human history. And they were not wrong. A medieval scholar called Micahel McCormick wrote about the year 536, saying that it was the worst year to be alive: “It was the beginning of one of the worst periods to be alive, if not the worst year.”
