Throughout the years, many ancient, lost cities have been sought after by countless explorers. Lost cities are mentioned across the globe. Legendary lost cities have been mentioned in the American continent, Africa, and even Europe as well as Asia. The most famous lost city is, without a doubt, Atlantis, a fabled city-civilization mentioned by the Greek philosopher Plato. But Atlantis is by no means the only such lost, legendary city. Another great interest is Iram, also known as Iram of the Pillars. Iram is mentioned in the Quran. Archeological research is scarce. Nonetheless, we can find the oldest mention of the city in the so-called Elba tablets, which date back to between 2,500 and 2250 B.C.
Over two decades ago, archaeologists discovered the remnants of an ancient city in southern Oman, and many hypothesized it was the lost, legendary city of Iram. However, this was never confirmed. Writers, archaeologists, and explorers have theorized about the location of the city for decades, and many have identified it with Alexandria, Damascus, and a city called Ubar. However, Iram continues to elude researchers to this day, and its myth continues to captivate the imagination of many.
