At Herculaneum, the remains of a wooden balcony still project from a Roman house. A carbonized door, a stairway, or a piece of furniture can make the town feel less like a collection of walls and more like a place interrupted. Vesuvius did not preserve everything evenly, but it preserved enough of ordinary interiors to make the ancient town unusually specific.

Herculaneum stood on the Bay of Naples, west of Vesuvius. It was smaller than Pompeii and known as a residential town with villas, baths, shops, and public buildings. In 79 CE, an eruption buried it beneath hot pyroclastic surges and flows. The material hardened around the buildings and sealed them below the ground.

A town beneath the town

Much of Herculaneum still lies under modern Ercolano. The excavated area is therefore only part of the ancient settlement. In the eighteenth century, workers reached the buried town through tunnels, cutting through the volcanic material to find rooms, sculptures, and wall paintings. Modern archaeology opened sections more carefully, but the basic problem remains: the ancient town survives directly beneath a living one.

The volcanic burial created a different kind of archive from the one at Pompeii. Ash and lapilli covered Pompeii over several hours, while the surges at Herculaneum filled streets and rooms with a compact volcanic deposit. That difference helped preserve materials that usually vanish: timber, roofs, food, baskets, doors, and other organic remains.

The preservation is not a perfect snapshot. Buildings collapsed, plaster was damaged, and the force of the eruption killed people who tried to escape. On the ancient shoreline, hundreds of skeletons were found in the vaulted boat chambers where residents had gathered. Herculaneum's exceptional condition should not soften the violence of the event that produced it.

Houses, shops, and public buildings

The excavated streets lead past houses with atriums, painted walls, gardens, shops, and small courtyards. Some properties belonged to wealthy owners, but the town was not made entirely of villas. Workshops, food outlets, rental spaces, and service areas were part of the same urban fabric.

The baths show how much of Roman public life depended on shared infrastructure. The palaestra provided space for exercise and social activity. The College of the Augustales, associated with the imperial cult, preserves a richly decorated building with a religious and civic role. The theatre, cut partly into the slope, could hold a large audience even though much of it remains buried.

The Villa of the Papyri stood outside the main urban grid. Its name comes from the hundreds of carbonized papyrus scrolls found there, many from a philosophical library. The rolls were blackened and fragile, not turned into readable books by the eruption. Their survival has allowed scholars to study texts that might otherwise have disappeared, while also creating a conservation problem that is still being worked on.

The evidence in wood and food

Wood is one of Herculaneum's most striking materials. Carbonized beams, shutters, shelves, stair rails, and furniture show details that stone alone cannot provide. They preserve construction methods, household arrangements, and the practical objects that connected one room to the next.

Food remains add another scale of information. Loaves, nuts, pulses, and other stores were caught in the disaster. They do not tell us exactly what every resident ate, but they give archaeology a physical record of kitchens, storage, trade, and the rhythms of domestic life.

A Roman wall painting can show a god, a garden, or a myth. A charred wooden hinge shows how someone moved through a doorway. The two kinds of evidence belong together. Herculaneum is valuable precisely because it joins grand decoration to the small mechanisms of living.

Excavation and care

The town's survival creates a demanding conservation problem. Once buried, the remains were protected from light and weather. Once excavated, plaster, wood, mosaics, and volcanic masonry are exposed to rain, humidity, roots, visitors, and the changing conditions of the modern environment.

The Archaeological Park of Herculaneum has worked with conservation specialists to document and stabilise the site. Research continues below the modern town and inside buildings already open to the public. The boundary between discovery and preservation is unusually visible here. Every newly exposed room is also a room that must be kept from disappearing again.

[Pompeii](/sites/pompeii/) is larger and more familiar, with long streets and broad excavated areas. [Ostia Antica](/sites/ostia-antica/) shows a Roman city that declined more gradually, without a single eruption sealing its houses. Herculaneum is different from both. Its streets are quieter, its remains more intimate, and its archive was made by a catastrophe that arrived in a matter of hours.

A Roman town in fragments

Herculaneum is often described as better preserved than Pompeii, which is true in some important ways but can flatten the story. Whole rooms sit beside missing districts. Rich houses sit beside ordinary shops. A wooden object survives in one building while its neighbour has been reduced to walls and volcanic fill.

That unevenness is part of the evidence. It shows how the eruption moved through the town and how later excavators reached it. Herculaneum is not a Roman town waiting to be uncovered in one complete piece. It is a layered place, still shared with the modern city above it.
