Tiwanaku grew on the Altiplano, near the southern shore of Lake Titicaca at about 3,850 metres above sea level. The altitude is severe, the nights are cold, and the growing season is short. Yet the settlement became the centre of a powerful Andean polity whose influence spread across the southern Andes and beyond.

The city began as a small settlement and developed into a planned centre between about 400 and 900 CE. Its monumental core included temples, platforms, plazas, carved gateways, and administrative buildings. Much of the ancient city was built of adobe and now lies beneath the modern village. The stone ceremonial centre is the part that remains visible.

A city arranged around stone

Tiwanaku's public and religious spaces were arranged around the cardinal directions. The builders cut and polished different stones with great precision, then fitted them into walls and platforms. Alignment, masonry, and movement between enclosed and open spaces gave the city its order.

The Akapana is the largest surviving platform mound. It originally rose through seven stepped platforms, supported by stone retaining walls and crowned by a temple. Much of the structure has been lost, but the surviving lower levels and drainage channels show the scale of the original construction.

Nearby, the semi-subterranean temple is surrounded by red sandstone pillars. Carved stone heads are set into its walls, while the Kalasasaya forms a large rectangular open temple to the north. The Gateway of the Sun is the most famous carved monument associated with Tiwanaku, although the gateway's original position and use have been debated.

Water and farming on the Altiplano

Tiwanaku's monumental centre depended on the countryside around it. Raised agricultural fields, terraces, and irrigation technology helped communities manage frost, flooding, and the uneven climate of the high plateau. The fields created warmer growing conditions and made better use of available water.

UNESCO records nearly 50,000 agricultural fields associated with the Tiwanaku region. Archaeologists still have to determine how many were in use by the city at any one time. The scale of the system is clear enough: the ceremonial centre depended on a productive landscape and on people who knew how to work it.

The drainage system in the ceremonial centre made the same point in stone. Rainwater was channelled below the platforms and plazas. At high altitude, managing a sudden downpour could protect a wall, a path, or a working space. Tiwanaku's builders gave as much attention to water moving under the city as to monuments rising above it.

A regional power

Tiwanaku was a capital, but its power was not contained within the monumental core. Towns and colonies appeared across a broad region, reaching into inter-Andean valleys and toward the Pacific coast. Goods, styles, religious ideas, and political relationships moved along with people.

The society was multiethnic, and its art combines human and animal forms in a shared visual language. The empire was not uniform. Its shared imagery shows how a central power could extend influence across communities with different local identities.

[Puma Punku](/sites/puma-punku/) belongs to the same monumental complex and preserves some of the most carefully worked andesite blocks at the site. [Machu Picchu](/sites/machu-picchu/) belongs to a much later Inca world, but the two sites share a concern with highland planning and stone construction. The [Nazca Lines](/sites/nazca-lines/) offer a different kind of landscape monument in Peru, built across a dry plain rather than a high plateau.

Decline beneath the modern village

Tiwanaku's political dominance began to decline in the eleventh century, and the empire collapsed during the first half of the twelfth. The causes are not explained by one surviving inscription. Climate change, political fragmentation, shifts in trade, and pressure on the agricultural system may all have contributed.

The modern village has grown over much of the ancient city, which limits what can be excavated. Conservation also has to contend with the cold, intense sunlight, rain, and wind of the Altiplano. Protection has to account for the buried city as well as the stones visible above ground.

The capital on the plain

Tiwanaku is sometimes presented through the Gateway of the Sun alone. The city was larger and more practical than that image suggests. Its temples and carved monuments were tied to drainage, farming, administration, and a regional network that carried the influence of the capital far beyond Lake Titicaca.

The highland setting is not a backdrop to Tiwanaku. It is the problem the city solved every day.
