Harappa
First-discovered Indus Valley site. Standardised brick sizes, weights, and seals across an empire larger than Egypt and Mesopotamia combined.
Harappa lies in the Punjab, beside an old course of the Ravi River. It gave its name to the Harappan or Indus civilisation, a network of cities and settlements that spread across parts of present-day Pakistan and northwestern India during the third and second millennia BCE.
The site is made up of low mounds, cemeteries, walls, streets, platforms, houses, workshops, and later remains. Its importance is not limited to one famous object. Harappa shows how a large urban society organised bricks, weights, craft production, food, burial, and movement across a broad landscape.
A city on raised mounds
Harappa was built up through repeated occupation. Mud-brick and baked-brick structures collapsed, were levelled, and were replaced, creating the artificial mounds that define the site today. The deepest layers reach back to the fourth millennium BCE, while the mature urban phase flourished between roughly 2600 and 1900 BCE.
The city included raised walled areas and a lower settlement. The exact functions of every mound are not certain, and older labels such as citadel, granary, or barracks can make the evidence seem more definite than it is. The layout nevertheless shows planning, standardised construction, and the ability to coordinate work across large areas.
Bricks at Harappa follow standard proportions shared with other Indus sites. That regularity did not require every city to be ruled by one empire. It could reflect common building traditions, shared measures, exchange, or political connections. The Indus world was extensive, but its institutions remain difficult to define because the script has not been deciphered.
Seals, weights, and trade
Harappan seals often show animals, including the famous so-called unicorn motif, along with short inscriptions. The seals may have marked goods, people, offices, or transactions, but their exact use varied and cannot be recovered from the images alone.
Standardised weights point to systems of measurement used across the civilisation. Beads, pottery, ornaments, tools, and other objects show skilled production and exchange. Materials from distant regions reached the city, while Indus goods travelled beyond it.
The archaeological evidence suggests a society connected by shared practices rather than a simple picture of one ruler at the top. No royal palace or monumental tomb comparable to those of Egypt has been securely identified at Harappa. That does not prove the absence of social hierarchy. It means the political structure has to be inferred from less obvious evidence.
Water, food, and the river
The old Ravi channel helped support settlement, agriculture, fishing, and transport. Rivers in the Indus region could change course, and the relationship between a city and its water sources was never permanent. Harappa's location was an advantage, but it also made the settlement dependent on an unstable landscape.
People farmed crops, kept animals, and used riverine resources. Archaeologists study seeds, animal bones, tools, and soil to reconstruct the diet and economy. These remains bring the city down from the level of seals and walls to the daily work of cooking, harvesting, making pottery, and moving supplies.
The city was not sustained by planning alone. Fields, villages, craft areas, and routes outside the excavated mounds formed part of the urban system. Much of that wider landscape remains buried beneath modern agriculture and settlement.
Cemeteries and changing communities
Harappa contains several cemeteries that belong to different periods. Burial practices changed through time, and the graves provide evidence of age, health, objects, and relationships. They do not give us a complete account of Harappan beliefs, and later cemetery groups should not be treated as one unchanged tradition.
By the second millennium BCE, the urban system had transformed. Large cities lost population or changed their organisation, while regional cultures developed in different directions. The process was not the same everywhere and cannot be reduced to one invasion or one sudden collapse.
Harappa's archaeological sequence is long enough to show both continuity and change. Earlier settlements became part of a mature urban system, and later communities reused parts of the city while living in a different political and economic world.
Excavation and loss
The site became known to modern archaeology in the nineteenth century, when ancient bricks were removed for railway construction. Regular excavations began in 1921, and the significance of Harappa became clear as its relationship to other Indus sites was established.
Excavation exposed structures that had been protected by soil. Salt, irrigation, heat, rain, and other conditions then began to damage the brickwork. Conservation is therefore part of the site's history. The same research that revealed Harappa also created new responsibilities for protecting the exposed remains.
[Mohenjo-daro](/sites/mohenjo-daro/) is the closest parallel, with its grid streets, wells, drains, and Great Bath. [Ur](/sites/ur/) shows a Mesopotamian city where writing can be read more fully, although the societies were different.
A civilisation without a readable voice
Harappa's script appears on seals and other objects, but no accepted decipherment lets us read the city's names, laws, prayers, or letters. That silence has encouraged wild claims, yet it also makes the physical evidence more important.
The bricks, weights, beads, animal remains, cemeteries, and settlement layers show a society that was highly organised without leaving behind a readable royal narrative. Harappa does not need a named emperor to be historically significant. Its urban plan is the record of many decisions made by people whose writing still resists us.
