Mohenjo-daro

Mohenjo-daro is a city of brick, drains, wells, and straight streets. Its most impressive feature is not a single palace or pyramid. It is the way the settlement was organised. Buildings follow a plan, wastewater was directed away from houses, and the elevated citadel stands above a lower town that once stretched across the Indus plain.
The city was built in the third millennium BCE in what is now Sindh, Pakistan. It belonged to the Indus civilisation, which flourished across a large region between roughly 2500 and 1500 BCE. The ruins cover about 240 hectares, although only around one-third of the site has been excavated since its discovery in 1922.
A city in two levels
Mohenjo-daro is commonly understood through two main sectors. The citadel rises on high embankments in the west, while the lower town extends to the east along the Indus. The elevated area held large public buildings and a Buddhist stupa was later built there, over the older ruins.
The lower city was laid out along streets that intersected at right angles. Houses, workshops, wells, and drains occupied blocks within the grid. The arrangement was not perfectly uniform, but it was regular enough to show that streets and building plots were planned rather than left to grow without coordination.
Baked brick was used widely. Standardised brick proportions made construction easier across the city and suggest shared rules or practices. The brick walls now look plain, but the decision to produce, transport, and use so many fired bricks required fuel, labour, and organisation.
Water and the Great Bath
Water management is the feature that made Mohenjo-daro famous. Wells served neighbourhoods and houses, while covered drains carried wastewater away from buildings. Soak pits and inspection points helped manage the flow. The system was not modern sanitation in the present sense, but it shows a civic concern with water, waste, and the relationship between private houses and public streets.
The Great Bath is the best-known building in the citadel. Its brick-lined tank was set within a larger complex of rooms and passageways. The structure was carefully waterproofed, and steps led down into the pool. Its exact use is unknown, but the scale and construction indicate that bathing carried a public or ceremonial significance.
Other large buildings have been interpreted as granaries, assembly spaces, or administrative structures, although those labels are not always secure. Mohenjo-daro's builders left no readable explanation of their institutions. The architecture shows planning and shared infrastructure, while the purpose of individual rooms often remains open to debate.
A city without a known king
The Indus script appears on seals, pottery, and other objects from Mohenjo-daro and related sites. It has not been securely deciphered. This means the city cannot yet be linked to named rulers, laws, personal letters, or a written account of its own history.
The absence of readable texts has encouraged people to fill the gap with speculation. The material evidence is more restrained. It shows a large urban society with standardised measures, skilled craft production, trade connections, drainage, and public buildings. It does not tell us whether Mohenjo-daro was ruled by a king, a council, a group of priestly elites, or a political system that does not fit those categories.
The small objects are important here. Beads, seals, pottery, tools, and figurines provide evidence of craft and exchange. They connect the city to a wider Indus world, but they do not turn the ruins into a simple story of one central empire.
Why the city was abandoned
Mohenjo-daro was occupied and altered over a long period. Its eventual decline was not necessarily caused by one invasion or a single disaster. Changes in the river system, climate, trade, and settlement patterns have all been considered, but the evidence does not support one final explanation that settles every question.
The ruins were rediscovered in the early twentieth century and exposed across a wide area. That excavation made the city famous, while also leaving its mud-brick structures vulnerable. Salts rising through the ground, heat, rain, groundwater, and flooding threaten the walls. Conservation is especially difficult because the same earth and water conditions that supported the ancient settlement now damage the exposed brick.

The city in the brickwork
Mohenjo-daro is compelling because it makes ordinary systems visible. A drain under a street, a private well, a brick staircase, and a public bath are evidence of decisions repeated across thousands of lives. The city was monumental in scale without relying on a single giant image of a ruler.
Much remains unexcavated, and much of what has been uncovered is under threat. The site therefore carries two stories at once: an ancient city organised through brick and water, and a modern conservation problem in which every exposed wall needs protection. Mohenjo-daro's most important achievement may be the one that is hardest to photograph, the agreement that made a city function.
