Stonehenge is usually shown as a circle of standing stones against an open sky. The view is real, but it leaves out most of the monument. The stones sit inside a much larger prehistoric landscape of avenues, earthworks, burial mounds, settlements, and other circles. Construction and use continued for roughly 1,500 years, from about 3700 to 1600 BCE.

The monument was never a single afternoon's achievement. People returned to Salisbury Plain, changed the ditches and banks, moved stones, rebuilt parts of the circle, and buried their dead nearby. Stonehenge is the surviving centre of a landscape that took generations to make.

The first earthwork

The earliest major work at Stonehenge was an earthwork enclosure. A ditch and bank marked out the site before the familiar stone circle appeared. People were already using the surrounding landscape for ceremonies and burials, and the monument grew from those earlier practices.

The large sarsen stones arrived later. The biggest weigh more than 40 tonnes, and the stones were shaped before being raised into the outer circle and inner trilithons. Horizontal lintels were fitted over the uprights with carefully shaped mortise-and-tenon joints. The lintels were also joined to one another with tongue-and-groove connections. These details are easy to miss from a distance, but they are the reason the circle has such a deliberate architectural quality.

The smaller bluestones came from much farther away. UNESCO places their source in the Preseli Hills of west Wales, as much as 240 kilometres from Stonehenge. The builders moved different kinds of stone across very different landscapes. Why those stones were chosen is unknown, but their journey tied the monument to a distant place.

A monument in a busy landscape

The Avenue connects Stonehenge with the River Avon. Other nearby monuments include the Cursus, Woodhenge, Durrington Walls, and a dense group of burial mounds. Durrington Walls is one of the largest known henges in Britain, measuring roughly 500 metres across. The settlement evidence there has helped archaeologists understand that the area could hold large gatherings as well as burials and ceremonies.

These sites belong together. A visitor who sees only the central circle misses the routes by which people approached it, the places where they may have lived or feasted, and the monuments that shaped the surrounding horizon. The plain was not empty. It was organised with banks, ditches, paths, timber, stone, and graves.

Avebury, about 30 kilometres away, belongs to the same World Heritage property. Its stone circle is the largest in the world, and its henge surrounds an area that now includes a village. Stonehenge is more famous, but Avebury makes the scale of prehistoric monument building harder to ignore.

Sun, seasons, and ceremony

The main axis at Stonehenge relates to the solstices. The midwinter sunset and midsummer sunrise pass through the monument in ways that cannot be accidental. The stones also frame the movement of light and shadow across the inner spaces.

The alignment tells us that the sky mattered at Stonehenge. It does not give us a complete explanation of the ceremonies. The monument may have helped mark the seasons, organise processions, honour the dead, or bring different communities together. The people who built it left no written programme for us to follow.

Burial mounds and human remains show that death was important to the landscape. They do not turn Stonehenge into a cemetery alone. The monument's meaning likely changed as new generations inherited it, and the long building history suggests that no single use explains every phase.

What the stones can tell us

Stonehenge gives unusually clear evidence of prehistoric engineering. Builders moved heavy stones, shaped hard surfaces, raised uprights, and built joints that still read as deliberate after four thousand years. The surrounding earthworks show that the work extended far beyond the circle itself.

It also shows how much can be lost when a society leaves no written account. We can trace the stones, the routes, the graves, and the dates. We can compare Stonehenge with [Avebury](/sites/avebury/), [Newgrange](/sites/newgrange/), and the [Carnac stones](/sites/carnac/). We cannot recover the words spoken during a procession or the exact relationship between the people who gathered there.

That uncertainty is not an invitation to invent a secret answer. The surviving evidence is already strong. Stonehenge was a long-term communal project, tied to the sky, the dead, and the landscape of southern Britain. The unanswered part is what each generation thought it was maintaining.
